Is Pinterest Changing Home Design?

Updated: Jan 23, 2022

Does the sheer magnitude of imagery help home owners come up with better designs, or does it just overwhelm them with too many choices and no guidance on what’s good and what’s not so good?

Here’s what we have noticed at Iniko!

In recent times our clients have been making bolder design choices. They want their homes to reflect their unique aesthetics and needs. With the staggering number of inspirational photos that are being published on websites like Pinterest and Houzz, I can guarantee you there is always someone who has done that design or pattern or bold colour that you want. This gives most of us the perspective or conceptual view of what is in our heads making it easy to decide.

Pinterest is a great tool used in the right way! It can be very helpful in conceptualising your design very easily even before the design process starts. But since most people look at the same trending designs it is more likely to have a dejavu moment in your home! And more often than not the highly edited pictures on such platforms cannot meet the expectations of the outcome in reality on site!

With new words entering our dictionary like ‘Pinterest house’ and ‘Pinterest paralysis’, they are more relevant than ever in recent times. With the astonishing number of pictures on the internet one can get confused and influenced to change their personal style. We might just end up creating a Pinterest House with a collection of not so cohesive designs that are trending. And it is very likely that we might end up with Pinterest paralysis where we jump from one trend to another not really narrowing down on our designs.

While it may look good in the pictures, we might not like it in the long run. Another major concern with trending styles on Pinterest are the materials used in achieving that look. They might not always be available in your locality or might not be up to the quality standards you are looking for.

With so many benefits and some setbacks to platforms like Pinterest, it is best to use it as a source of inspiration while not getting too carried away with the fast changing trends. Realising one’s personal style is key before scouting the internet as you have to live and make wonderful memories in your beautiful home for years to come!
